Alliance Insurance has been in operation in Tanzania since 1999, and is owned by:
Union Trust Investments Limited – 55%
Heritage Insurance Company Tanzania Limited – 45%
Alliance is presently a composite insurer (i.e. it underwrites life assurance and short-term insurance), but pending legislation may result in a split of the company into separate life and short-term operations.
Although Heritage and Alliance operate in the same short-term insurance market the two companies are strategically and functionally separate. Insurance transactions between the two organisations are all on an arm’s-length basis and it is frequent that both will compete for the same business.
On occasion the market capacity for large insurance risks is inadequate, but the combined capacity of Heritage and Alliance creates a unique opportunity for both companies to share each other’s financial resources, creating a significantly increased local capacity.
In some operational areas, such as information technology disaster recovery, the companies co-operate in order to achieve economies of scale.
There is also regular communication between the two companies regarding core business performance information. This allows each company to make use of a far larger joint statistical sample, essential to making more accurate and useful performance forecasts.
Strategis Insurance (Tanzania) Limited
Strategis is the largest Healthcare insurer in Tanzania, and has operated here since 2003.
Heritage Tanzania owns a 49% share in Strategis.
The objective of Strategis is to ‘increase access to Healthcare and make Healthcare relationship work.’
Strategis is a fully-fledged medical insurer and not a broker or on-seller of medical services. It utilises various service suppliers, both local and international, to ensure that its clients receive timeous and appropriate medical attention.
